Batey Prudencio, Dominican Republic

Overview:

Batey Prudencio is a small rural community located on the outskirts of Hato Mayor del Rey.  Originally established to house Haitian migrant workers employed in the sugar cane industry, it remains home to families who face ongoing challenges related to poverty, limited infrastructure, and lack of basic services.

Key Characteristics:

  •  Population: Approximately 80 families
  •  Primary Language: Haitian Creole and Spanish
  •  Economic Activity: Seasonal agricultural labor, mainly sugar cane cutting
  •  Education: Limited access; many children walk long distances to attend school
  •  Infrastructure: Most homes are constructed from wood or tin, with no access to proper sanitation or running water
  •  Faith and Culture: Strong sense of community and spiritual resilience; limited local church presence

Needs and Opportunities:

  •  Construction of safe and dignified latrines and bathrooms
  •  Access to clean water and hygiene education
  •  Support for youth engagement through sports and discipleship programs

Las Malvinas, Dominican Republic

Overview:

Las Malvinas is an urban-margin neighborhood located within Hato Mayor del Rey. It is a vibrant but vulnerable community with a high concentration of children and youth, many of whom live in environments marked by economic hardship, unemployment, and limited recreational or educational opportunities.

Key Characteristics:

  • Population: Over 450 families
  • Demographic: Predominantly Dominican families with a growing Haitian population
  • Economic Activity: Informal labor, small street vending, and low-wage jobs
  • Education: Nearby public schools exist, but dropout rates are high, especially among adolescents
  • Infrastructure: Crowded housing, many homes with poor water drainage and lack of access to basic services
  • Faith and Culture: Active local churches play a key role in community support and youth outreach

  • Programs focused on youth development, sports, and entrepreneurship
  • Mentorship and discipleship initiatives in partnership with local churches
